Search for missing Washington, Conn. hiker in Sierra Nevada enters seventh day

A search helicopter is used in the search for a missing Marine from Washington, Conn. who went missing while hiking the Sierra High Route in California. Contributed Tuesday is the seventh day of a multi-agency search for a missing Marine from Washington, Conn. in a mountainous region of Central Sierra Nevada, Calif. Authorities believe 24-year-old 1st Lt. Matthew Kraft was on a planned 195-mile hike through the Sierra Nevada when he disappeared. He began the hike on Feb. 24 and planned to complete his trip on March 4 or March 5 in Bridgeport, Calif. The search began on March 4, when Kraft’s father contacted the Mono County Sheriff’s Office to report that he had not heard from his son, according to a news release from the National Park Service.
